Another thought... I have a Kindle, and an Android phone, I also work with other devices for testing at work.
The main thought (and which the respective companies are hoping for) is that if you've already purchased many apps, music, etc. with one company (Google, Apple, etc.) you may want to stick with a device that has an OS with native support.
For instance if you've purchased lots of apps in the Google Play store, you may be better off getting an Android Tablet so you do not have to repurchase the same apps on the Apple App Store or Kindle Store.
Lastly, Kindle supports Amazon's app store, you can side load apps, but some don't work 100%. I will say that if you like reading, I love my kindle and pay for Amazon prime which would allow you to get 1 free book a month and stream videos similar to Netflix.
