I love the series, started watching it by accident while zapping in Turkey at my sistes place (that time GoT was not in German tv yet) after watching a few episodes it totally caught me. Bought the books on amazon the next day back in Germany and I still read them. Because I started with the movie first, I already got the actors as characters in mind but they all totally rock.
I tried to read just as much as enough to be more or less at the same plot like in the movie so I don't get any spoilers.
I could not stand to read sth like the red wedding in the book and watch it in a year when the season goes on xD

My fav character is Arya. She is pretty badass and she develops into a beast getting Needle back whooop whooop
Besides her, I really liked Khal Drogo. Especially the corowning of Viserys =D

My fav book is book 2 till now. Reading book 4 right now...
I also liked some changes in the movie compared to the books e.g. The red wedding. That was so much more dramatic that way and would be totally wasted if Robs girl would have left before.

I thought about getting them all to an external harddrive but then I thought I will just buy a collectors box when there is such a thing in about 2-3 years after GoT has ended xD

Got a hint for you:
Don't google anything about GoT. On any wiki you will see who survives and who already passed away. They will spoil the story and it won't make any fun to watch it, because the unexpected deaths are one of the best parts I like GoT.

I apologize if I already spoiled some stuff but there is plenty of more to enjoy.
I highly recommend reading the books. It made the whole understanding a lot easier for me. Especially at the beginning you will get flooded with details and names which can be frustrating xD
I'm sure you will like it though. After watching season 1 I got addicted and watched the rest in a rush because I did not want to wait^^
