Does anyone here flip balisongs? It's something I started recently, and it's a lot of fun.

About a month ago I bought my first balisong, a cheap ($35) Bear & Son Cutlery "Black Armor Piercing Butterfly". It has a 4" tanto blade and 5" cast handles with a black epoxy powder coat.



I've been flipping it quite a bit since then and have learned most of the basic tricks (such as the horizontal and vertical openings, latch drop, quick draw, icepick spin, Y2K rollover, and the moves performed by the spy in TF2).

I'm continuing to learn, and just worked on learning the basic aerial tonight, which I now can do correctly around 25% of the time.

I bought the cheap $35 Bear balisong because I wasn't sure if it was something that I would enjoy. Well, I'm now hooked, and have just bought a Bradley Kimura V (around $100) which will hopefully get here sometime next week.



It's supposed to be a huge step up in quality over the Bear, and I can't wait to see it for myself.

So are there any other SRRP members into balisongs?

The butterflies are forbidden here in Germany, even though you can buy them legally if youre above 18.
Nevertheless you cant take it with you and if you get into a police check you might get in trouble^^

Never tried them but Im not really into guns / knives or any other kind of weapons anyways =D
Hope you will never have to use them, but to make your tricks only

lol are those the knives that the Spy uses in TF2?

Balisongs are illegal in Canada, but I find them kinda dumb myself, but thats just because I'd rather have a knife as a tool rather than a toy. That said Check out cutlerylover on youtube, the dudes got a bunch of tutorials on balisong tricks.

Here in New Jersey I can't carry a balisong, since it falls under the definition of a "gravity knife" in NJ law.

I do carry a knife daily however (any one of several Kershaw Speedsafe assisted-opening folding knives), and do use them daily, just not against another human being.

If I needed to use a knife in defense I would, but only because I cannot carry a pistol outside of my home in New Jersey. I do have concealed carry permits from the states of Utah and Florida, which allow me to carry a gun in most of the country. But a handgun is definitely not something I use daily; I've never even had to just draw my CCW pistol for self-defense, and I pray that I never will. But I would much rather have a gun and not need it, than to need a gun and not have it.

Yes they are, and I have learned all the moves that he does too.

That's why I have actual utility & tactical knives, so I can dedicate balisongs as toys. Cutlerylover does have some great videos; I've learned most of what I know from him.

Well said Jersey. A knife is no more so a weapon than a screwdriver is, they have their applications as tools, but can be misused as weapons, but so can your car or a can of peas. I"m currently looking at a spyderco paramilitary 2, but I hate paying close to 40 bucks in shipping for something that costs $120.

I wish Canada allowed for CCW, though there are few situations I feel would warrant it... Toronto has had 21 murders so far this year (12 gun related), Chicago's about the same size, it's had over 200. Canada's in sort of a bubble I guess.

Yeah have a $60 Bear with Damascus steel myself. Its 9 inch with a black blade. I began "flipping" in Feb.

I just sheared a pivot pin on my Bear balisong. Luckily I was able to make a replacement by cutting down a nail and mushrooming the ends to secure it in place.
