Politics Anybody? Nov 2012 Elections

Postby Maj.Gen.patjeffe » Wed Aug 08, 2012 2:14 pm

I am curious as to how my fellow American clansmen and pubbers feel about their choices in the upcoming presidential elections in November. As a Canadian I have a vested interest in the success of the US and I feel the looming choice to be made will have a fairly dramatic impact on the direction of the US. Both the dems and reps represent ideals that would be considered on the right on of the spectrum over here (reps more to the right of course) but down south I know the two represent the extremes or left and right. How do you guys feel about this? Are you party members on either side or are you feeling disfranchised from both? Are social issues a big concern for you or are you more concerned about the state of the economy? or perhaps do you feel they cannot be dealt with separately?

well I have personally created the Cannabis party lawl, but seriosuly, Both parties are working together, And both are corrupt, Both should be thrown into the fire....

And the independent candidates suck too. 2/3 are just to get gay marriage legalized, and the last one is for polygamy.

So Like I said, we are all screwed no matter who wins.

Well, this atheist, pro-choice Republican is voting for Romney (since there's no one else). Anything's better than a communist who just wants to bring down America to the lowest common denominator.

Wait Asty, you're pro-choice, atheist and literate, yet you're voting for Romney? Excuse my language, but what the fuck is wrong with you? If you think Obama is a communist I have no problem understanding how Mcarthy got so many people to go crazy over the "red menace". You guys in the states have no actual realistic idea of what communist or socialism actual are or represent. Obamas not a communist, in fact he's further right than Reagan ever was.

Both would let us die of starvation no matter what.

At least if obama isnt in office I dont have to hear that bs from every black person I have ever met, "You cant say nuttin against me because im black and we have a black guy in the white house".... Sooo sick of hearing that one... just because hes black doesnt mean he cares about you...

oooo politics always gets everybody's panties in a knot :P, Yes Asty I am Canadian and I mentioned that in the next sentence but perhaps my opener was a little misleading (should have wrote, my fellow clansmen who are American, and come to think of it clansmen has a bad ring to it too! ) American politics are more interesting than our own so that is where my interest comes in. It involves a lot of theatre and attack ads that would only hurt their creators up here (many Canadians see attack adds as childish and unprofessional and they often backfire when used). Consequently, our elections can be a little dry :P Lastly, Fox news makes me laugh a lot, it's quite comedic to anybody capable of critical thinking, even if that's not what their producers intend.

I have a peculiar mix of beliefs that are hard to align with either party. I enjoy many libertarian concepts but I do believe in having a strong and accountable government, which will not win me any smiles at a tea party convention. I like having a strong social net to take care of our people as a whole. I am quite lucky to have gotten where I am today and I feel a duty to share the generosity that has been given to me (mind you I work my ass off in tandem with the gifts given!). I am more and more feeling that social issues cannot be separated so easily from financial and economic problems (Look up the book Freakonomics or the many others like it that demonstrate though trend analysis how certain dogmatic beliefs are the route cause of world poverty, leading to hunger, crime and other destabilizing world forces). I believe in a free market so long as equal environmental & labour conditions are part of the contract, ie. establishing a free market with China is catastrophic for the west since they will beat us every time by enslaving their own people, something we should not be willing to do to compete. I'm sure I come off as a little ethnocentric when I say this but I believe Canada, although not perfect, represents the best mix of values that we should pursue for the benefit of all humanity.

This being said if I was an American citizen I would probably be in the Obama camp (gotta concur with Brandon that Obama is pretty far from being communist or socialist but I can see how he might a appear as one compared to the subtle rep. motto of "every man, women and invalid for themselves"). Some issues I take a rep. stance but moreso it is the dems I agree with so I guess I choose the lesser of two evils.

Good to see people interested in the direction of their country!!!

Well said Patt, seems we tend to fall in line together, perhaps we should start our own party. Can't do any worse than Elizabeth May right? Did you hear about the last caucus meeting the green party had? It was in her mirror.

She has some nice things to say but no proven leadership abilities in my mind. For Canadian politics it's pretty hard to find myself in any party. According to the issues I would be a liberal but the bastards have proven their corruption time and time again that voting is a painful decision for me.

Tainted -> I do not agree with you that just because somebody has money doesn't mean that they are incapable of caring. In business many people are forced to choose between bad decisions and worse. In my industry there are some really good people that get painted as evil by the minority that suffer from a certain business decision. If those people were in his shoes I doubt they would have the ability to make the tough calls they had to do.

What I have seen is that people who earned their money by hard work and risk have an appreciation for the effort that goes into building a fortune. They are tend to be the great philanthropic leaders we see in the world. By contrast, those that inherit a fortune and then use it to make more tend to be the more rotten types since they tend to take things for granted. It can still be difficult to lay all the blame on them since, at least in part, their personality is a product of their upbringing. This is where entitlement comes in, they think money just comes out of nowhere if you have a good business "sense" but really they came out of the box with a silver spoon lodged some wheres (D trump comes to mind). They blame the poverty of the poor on the poor themselves since they cannot understand why their hard work doesn't bring them great swaths of money. Hard work alone will not bring you wealth in this world of ours, that is a myth propagated to keep the masses productive (the rep. statement comes to mind, and this is a real one by Mitch Daniels "We will always be a nation of 'haves' and 'soon to haves". Society would never work on that principle and never will. You need help to get rich here, but hard work will grow that initial investment. If anybody has an example of where this is not the case I'd love to hear it as I've never seen it in the history of mankind.
