It was just a bug in the forum software that caused an erroneous (grossly inflated) maximum number of users online. Throughout the day in question (2013-08-26), there were a total of 181 visits which came from 68 unique visitors, which is typical for this site's traffic.
The webserver's load, # of running processes, memory usage, network throughput, etc. showed nothing to indicate a DDoS of any size. The servers hosting this site do have some protections against DDoS attacks, and can survive a small to medium size DDoS with no negative impact.
I reset the "most users ever online" to get rid of that erroneous statistic. We're back up to 20 as the most users online as of this reply.
